Formula

Weekly fuel = round-trip miles × days ÷ MPG × price. Weekly extras = parking + tolls × days. Monthly ≈ weekly × 4.345; annual = weekly × 52. Time cost = (minutes × days ÷ 60) × hourly wage × 52.

Example

40 mi RT, 5 days/wk, 28 MPG, $4/gal, $5/day parking, 60 min/day, $30/hr → ≈ $237/mo + ~$7,800/yr in time.

How to use

  1. Use round-trip miles, not one-way.
  2. Include parking, transit fares or tolls under extras.
  3. Time cost is optional but powerful when comparing job offers or remote work.

When it's useful

  • Comparing job offers with different commutes.
  • Justifying a move closer to work.
  • Weighing remote, hybrid and in-office options.

Common examples

40 mi RT, 5 days, 25 mpg, $4
≈ $32/wk fuel — before parking and tolls.
Add $5/day parking
Adds $25/wk → ~$108/mo.
Time costs too
1 hr/day @ $30/hr ≈ $7,800/yr in lost time.

Frequently asked

Should I include depreciation?

We focus on cash and time. For full ownership cost, use the Total Car Ownership Calculator.

What hourly wage should I use?

Either your real wage, or what your time is worth to you. Some people use after-tax to be honest.

What about transit commutes?

Set MPG very high or 999 to zero out fuel, and put the fare under parking + tolls.
